Subject: Making Waves December 2025 Meeting

Our next Making Waves meeting will continue exploring the challenges
related to the analysis of intonation. On December 10, Maria Francesca
Ferin will give a talk titled “Analysing intonation: comparing
perceptual annotations and acoustic measurements.”
We look forward to seeing many of you there and to another lively
discussion.
Abstract:
This talk addresses the advantages and disadvantages of adopting
different methods of analysing intonation. I will compare the use
perceptually based labelling systems such as the Tone and Break
Indices (ToBI, Pierrrehumbert, 1980) with various types of
phonetic/acoustic analyses: gamms (e.g., Wieling 2018); ProPer (Albert
et al. 2022); pointwise F0 and time alignment values. Subsequently,
the open discussion will address the opportunity of choosing one over
the other, or rather of integrating different approaches, and the type
of conclusions that can be drawn from the use of different methods.
To wrap up:
Time: 10th of December 2025, 15:00 – 16:00 (CET)

acoustic measurements
