Description:
The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) at Stony
Brook University, a flagship campus of the SUNY system, seeks to
appoint a full-time Lecturer in Hindi. The initial appointment,
beginning Fall 2025, is for two years, with the possibility of
renewal. The successful applicant will be expected to teach Hindi
language courses at all levels, for both heritage and non-heritage
students, with the possibility of teaching courses in literature or
linguistics. They will develop curricular and teaching materials,
contribute to development of programs in teaching Hindi as a second
language, conduct placement tests, train and supervise teaching
assistants, and perform departmental committee service. They will be
expected to work in close coordination with and contribute to the
development of the Mattoo Center for India Studies.
The New York metropolitan region has a dynamic Indian/South Asian
community with many cultural resources and events. Stony Brook
University’s vibrant and nationally recognized Mattoo Center for India
Studies sponsors a plethora of academic and cultural events. The
Department of AAAS offers a major and a master’s program in Asian and
Asian American Studies, a master’s in History of Philosophy East and
West, and a minor in South Asian Studies. Lecturers engage in teaching
and service, and also have research opportunities. This position is
non-tenure-track and the employment is for a 9-month service period,
with the possibility of summer and winter teaching and participation
in a Study Abroad program in India.
Required Qualifications:
- Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in
Hindi language, linguistics, literature, or related area.
- Applicants must have native or near-native proficiency in both
spoken and written Hindi, and fluency in both spoken and written
English.
- Applicants must have at least two years of experience teaching Hindi
as a second/foreign language or heritage language at the college or
university level.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A PhD or ABD in Hindi language, linguistics, literature, or related
area.
- Familiarity with the use of modern technology in language teaching
