Call for Papers:
The journal Metodički vidici (Methodical Perspectives) is pleased to
announce a call for papers for a special issue focused on Challenges
in English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). This special issue aims
to bring together cutting-edge research and innovative perspectives on
the most pressing challenges faced by educators, students and
institutions in implementing and sustaining EMI across diverse
contexts.
As EMI continues to expand globally, it encounters a range of
linguistic, pedagogical, institutional and socio-cultural challenges.
Despite its potential to foster internationalization and improve
global mobility, EMI often operates within complex and underexplored
terrains that demand critical examination.
We invite contributions that address, but are not limited to, the
following topics:
Linguistic and Academic Readiness
 • Challenges related to students’ English proficiency and its impact
on content comprehension.
 • Strategies for balancing disciplinary content with students’
linguistic needs.
Training and Support for Teachers
 • Professional development and training for EMI instructors.
 • Addressing the dual demands of teaching content and supporting
language development.
 • Case studies of innovative teacher training programs in EMI
settings.
Equity and Inclusion
 • EMI’s role in perpetuating or addressing inequalities in education.
 • Access challenges for students with limited English proficiency or
from underrepresented backgrounds.
 • The impact of EMI on preserving local languages and cultural
identities.
Assessment and Evaluation
 • Developing valid and reliable assessments that integrate content
knowledge and language proficiency.
 • Innovations in EMI-specific assessment tools and methodologies.
Institutional and Financial Constraints
 • The financial realities of EMI implementation, including
underfunded support structures.
 • Addressing increased workloads for EMI instructors and
administrative challenges.
 • Exploring sustainable EMI funding and resource allocation models.
Student Well-Being and Motivation
 • Cognitive and emotional challenges of learning in a non-native
language.
 • Strategies to support student engagement and motivation in EMI
programs.
Policy and Implementation Gaps
• Misalignment between national or institutional EMI policies and
practical realities.
• Exploring institutional strategies to bridge policy and practice
gaps.
Metodički vidici (Methodical Perspectives), published by the Faculty
of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad, is dedicated to the field of
methodology of teaching language, literature and social sciences, with
the purpose of promoting the scientific affirmation of applied
linguistics and glottodidactics. It is indexed in MLA, DOAJ and ERIH
PLUS and is available in the EBSCO database. Journal Methodical
Perspectives publishes original, previously unpublished papers.
