We invite proposals for a conference panel honoring the life and
scholarship of Irmengard Rauch, a pioneering figure in Germanic
Linguistics and Semiotics. A professor of German at UC Berkeley until
her retirement in 2021, the interdisciplinary breadth of Rauch’s work
bridged historical and contemporary linguistics, semiotics, cognitive
linguistics, and linguistic fieldwork, shaping generations of scholars
and advancing the study of linguistics in the field of German.
This panel seeks contributions that engage with the broad scope of
Rauch’s intellectual legacy—from Germanic philology and linguistic
change to semiotic theory and interspecies communication. We encourage
both theoretical and empirical approaches, as well as reflections on
the impact of Rauch’s scholarship in contemporary linguistics and
German.
Please submit a 350 to 500-word abstract and a short bio or CV to Marc
Pierce (mpierc at austin.utexas.edu) and Lindsay Preseau
(lpreseau at iastate.edu) by March 10, 2025. Please do not hesitate to
contact us if you have any questions.
