Institution/Organization: Nanjing Normal University

Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Computational Linguistics;
Text/Corpus Linguistics

Description:

Description:

Ancient Languages Corpus Construction and Natural Language Processing
for non-Chinese students. Advances in artificial intelligence present
unprecedented opportunities to unlock the secrets of ancient texts,
reconstruct fragmented languages, and bridge the gap between
historical linguistics and modern technology. Ancient language
documentation faces challenges such as decaying manuscripts,
undeciphered scripts, and limited interdisciplinary collaboration.
This project addresses these issues by leveraging AI to (1) Construct
lexicon, corpus in Ancient Chinese, Sumerian and related languages.
(2) parse and analyze grammatical structures using NLP-driven models,
and (3) generate accessible interpretations or translations to
revitalize scholarly and public engagement with linguistic heritage.
The PhD candidates will develop innovative AI methodologies to tackle
three core objectives: (1) detecting and classifying ancient scripts
in fragmented or degraded materials (e.g., books, papyri,
inscriptions), (2) verifying linguistic hypotheses through
cross-referencing with multilingual corpora and archaeological
databases using knowledge-enhanced AI systems, and (3) generating
dynamic, context-aware interpretations to support philological
research and cultural preservation efforts.
