"It's not all work being an activist after all”: A discursive analysis
of in-group identities on radical right Twitter.
Dr Keighley Perkins, Lecturer in Applied Linguistics (Swansea
University)
Identity is understood as a social and interactional phenomenon shaped
through discourse (Bucholtz and Hall, 2005). Its collaborative nature
means it can be used by social groups to create community (Bucholtzand
Hall, 2004), particularly within the radical right where in-group
identities foster belonging for those who feel isolated (Barlett and
Miller, 2012). This talk examines how three radical right groups – the
English Defence League, Siege Culture and Generation Identity –
construct political identities on Twitter through linguistic and
visual means. Particular attention will be paid to how these three
groups seek to gain political legitimacy while rejecting the political
mainstream.
Dr Keighley Perkins is a researcher and lecturer in Applied
Linguistics at Swansea University. Alongside her teaching
responsibilities, she works as part of Project DRAGON, a
multidisciplinary team of researchers who seek to investigate,
understand and disrupt online child exploitation and abuse. Her
previous research has explored cyber-crisis communication,
peer-to-peer online sexual harassment among young people, and the
impact of media guidelines on representations of male schizophrenia in
the UK national press. Her research interests include online harms,
identity construction, political communication and digital discourse
