The AHRC-DFG-funded QuBiSM project (Questions, Bias, Multimodality:
Negotiating Meaning in Interaction) invites applications for a
postdoctoral researcher position based in Cologne. The project, headed
by PIs Dr Johannes Heim (Aberdeen), Prof. Dr. Sophie Repp (Cologne)
and Dr Rebecca Woods (Newcastle), will examine the prosody and
co-speech gesture associated with negative questions in English and
German, as well as their acquisition. For a short summary, see

positions in this project: one in the UK, one in Cologne. We are

The position is a 33 month position starting 1st May 2025. The
candidate will undertake the following collaborative tasks:
- Corpus analysis of prosody and gesture of negative questions in
German speech corpora
- Statistical analysis and theoretical evaluation of the findings
- Publication of the results in peer-reviewed journals
- Travel (conferences, 6 monthly team meetings in person)
- Experimental research:
-- Auditory production and perception of negative questions by German
children age 4-6 years; including recruitment of children
-- Multimodal production of negative questions by German adults
(audio & video)
-- Pragmatic judgements of negative questions (written and audio) by
German adults (online surveys)
The position requires the following profile:
- PhD in linguistics, psychology or related subject
- English language skills at (near) native level
- Essential: experience in language acquisition research, German
language skills at (near) native level
- Desirable: experience in phonetics / laboratory phonology and/or
gesture research and/or pragmatics
