Call for Papers:
In a rapidly globalizing world, where cultural exchanges are more
frequent and widespread than ever, the role of applied linguistics,
literary studies, and translation has become critical in bridging
cultures through facilitating communication and fostering
understanding and appreciation across diverse cultural landscapes.
Applied linguistics’ pivotal role in analyzing and improving the ways
in which people communicate across languages and cultures provides
insights into ways of overcoming linguistic barriers specifically in
global migration, trade, and digital communication. Literary studies
examines how literature reflects and shapes cultural identities,
worldviews, and historical contexts, through offering insights into
the values, conflicts, and experiences of diverse societies,
facilitating a broader understanding of the human condition in its
many forms. Translation bridges linguistic and cultural divides
through transferring words and adapting meanings, idioms, and cultural
nuances, hence playing an indispensable role in connecting cultures
and facilitating the exchange of ideas, literature, knowledge, and
traditions. These fields, therefore, promote a more interconnected
world, where cultural boundaries are less defined, and understanding
across differences is promoted.
The Centre for Applied Linguistics Research (CALR) at the Arab Open
University, invites scholars, translators, linguists, and literary
experts to explore the dynamic intersections of language, culture, and
communication across the globe and engage in interdisciplinary
dialogue. The provided research themes explore the interconnectedness
of applied linguistics, literary studies, and translation in fostering
a deeper understanding of different cultures. They also provide
avenues for addressing contemporary challenges in communication,
cultural representation, and education in a globalized world. on the
vital ways in which Linguistics, Literary Studies, and Translation
shape and reshape our understanding of cultures and communication in
an ever-globalizing world.
Bridging Cultures: Linguistics, Literary Studies, and Translation in a
Global Context encompass a wide range of themes that explore how these
fields intersect and contribute to intercultural understanding.
Contributors can present or reflect on their experience in relation to
any of the below subthemes:
1. Language and Identity in a Globalized World
 • The role of language in maintaining cultural heritage and the
negotiation of identity in diasporic communities.
 • How do language choices influence cultural identity in multilingual
societies?
 • Language shift and its impact on cultural preservation across
generations.
2. Translation as Cultural Mediation
 • How do translators balance accuracy with cultural sensitivity?
 • The role of translation in the dissemination of global literature
and the cultural implications of adapting texts for different
audiences.
 • Translation and its impact on intercultural communication in
international relations, business, and diplomacy.
3. Intercultural Communication and Applied Linguistics
 • Strategies for improving intercultural competence through language
education.
 • Applied linguistics in the context of global migration and
communication in multicultural societies.
 • The impact of digital communication technologies on language use
and intercultural interactions.
4. Literary Studies and Intercultural Understanding
 • How do literary narratives from different cultures represent shared
human experiences while highlighting distinct cultural values?
 • Literature as a vehicle for exploring themes of migration, exile,
and diaspora in a globalized world.
