Description:
The Department of Linguistics invites applications for a postdoctoral
researcher in Phonetics and Phonology to participate in NSERC (The
National Science and Engineering Research Council) and SSHRC (The
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada)-funded
research projects: “Explaining sound change through mapping the
distribution of phonetic biases and automatic speech analysis” (PI:
Morgan Sonderegger) and “Towards a robust model of individual
differences in context effects in speech perception'' (PI: Meghan
Clayards). We seek an ambitious and intellectually curious researcher
to work towards the broad goal of scaling up analysis of production
and/or perception of phonetic biases in spoken language, e.g. across
languages or across speakers/listeners.
The successful candidate should have a PhD in linguistics or a closely
related discipline (such as psychology, computer science or speech
science) by the position’s start date; excellent writing skills and
publication record; a strong background in computational and/or
experimental techniques, such as programming (R, Python), statistical
modeling, conducting online experiments (Prolific, Gorilla), and
acoustic analysis; and the ability and desire to learn new skills in
these areas.
Planned start and end date of appointment: Sept 2025 (negotiable), one
year with possible one-year renewal pending funding and satisfactory
performance.
