Subject: Call for Chapters: Content and Language Integrated Learning in Physical Education
We invite chapter proposals for a new edited volume exploring Content
and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Physical Education
(CLIL-PE) (De Gruyter) across pre-primary, primary, secondary, and
tertiary contexts. This volume aims to bring together foundational
theoretical, empirical, and practice-based perspectives, as well as
insights into Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) for educators working in CLIL-PE.
CLIL is understood here in its broadest sense: the dual focus on
developing both communicative competence in language and
subject-specific knowledge. 'Language' may refer to a second, foreign,
heritage, minoritised, or visual-gestural language. 'Content' refers
to disciplinary knowledge, practices, and processes typically embedded
within curricula or specialist domains.
We welcome contributions aligned with one of four key strands:
Theoretical Foundations of CLIL in Physical Education
Empirical Research in CLIL-PE
Preparation of PE Practitioners for CLIL contexts
Practice-based, Research-informed Proposals for CLIL-PE
Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:
Multimodality and the genre of PE classroom discourse
Longitudinal learning trajectories across educational phases
Competency-based models for CLIL-PE teacher education
The impact of movement and outdoor spaces on CLIL
Bi-/multilingual disciplinary literacies and Pluriliteracies
approaches
Cognitive Discourse Functions (CDFs) in CLIL-PE
Task-based learning and assessment strategies
Equity, inclusion, and barriers to participation
Gender, identity, and intersectional approaches in CLIL-PE
Wearable technologies and data use in CLIL settings
Established pedagogical models (e.g. station teaching)
Target Audience
This volume is intended for PE teachers in CLIL contexts, language
educators, researchers in PE and Applied Linguistics, teacher
educators, and curriculum developers. Submissions should balance
academic rigour with practical applicability.
