Level: PhD

Duties: Research, Project Work

Specialty Areas: Pragmatics; Semantics
Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The following position is available in the newly established
Collaborative Research Center 1718 “Common Ground: Cognition – Grammar
– Communication” (funded by the German Research Foundation, DFG).
PhD Researcher in Linguistics (m/f/d, E13 TV-L, 75%)
Application deadline: 04.08.2025
The position begins on 01 October 2025 and ends on 30 June 2029.
The position is associated with project C5 “Multiple Common Grounds -
Linguistic Mechanisms for Literary Meaning” of CRC 1718 (principle
investigators: Matthias Bauer, Sigrid Beck, Angelika Zirker). The
project investigates the pragmatic mechanisms that underly the
interpretation of literary texts. For the advertised PhD researcher
position, this work involves the semantic and pragmatic analysis of
utterances and texts relative to the central pragmatic notion of
Common Ground.
Only applicants that hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in
Linguistics or a similar Language Science area by 01 October 2025 are
eligible for the role.
The ideal candidate for this position has:
 - a strong familiarity with current theories in compositional
semantics and formal pragmatics
 - a research interest in the semantics/pragmatics interface
(including e.g. the analyses of speech acts, presupposition and
implicature)
 - an interest in considering literary texts as a data source.
The project offers a cohesive interdisciplinary research environment
at the University of Tübingen and a dedicated interdisciplinary
project team. We will support the PhD researcher in gaining any skills
essential to the successful completion of the project, and we offer
her/him/them the opportunity to obtain additional skills related to
interdisciplinary language science research more generally. Equally
qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preference in the
hiring process. The University of Tübingen is committed to equal
opportunities and diversity. It therefore takes individual situations
into account and asks for relevant information.
The University of Tübingen seeks to raise the number of women in
research and teaching and therefore urges suitable qualified women
academics to apply for this position. Your application, which must be
written in English, should consist of a motivation letter summarizing
your suitability for the role, an extensive CV that includes a list of
publications (if any), a work sample (for instance the MA thesis) and
the contact details of two potential referees. The deadline for
submitting applications is 4 August 2025 at 9:00 (Berlin time).
Applications should be addressed to the project’s principal
investigator Sigrid Beck, but should sent electronically to:
sekretariat-beck at nphil.uni-tuebingen.de. Enquiries may also be sent to
this email
address.
Candidates shortlisted for an interview will be contacted in
mid-August. Interviews will be conducted by the principle investigator
Sigrid Beck.
The employment will be handled by the central administration of the
University of Tübingen.
