Description:
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan, Ann
Arbor, invites applications for a new full-time, tenure-track
position, beginning on August 25, 2026. This is a university-year
appointment and will be at the level of advanced assistant professor
or tenured associate or full professor.
Artificial intelligence developments are upending the scientific
landscape and creating unprecedented research opportunities in
linguistics. This is a fast growing research area that is leveraging
powerful generative AI models to serve as robust artificial model
systems for human language and cognition.
The University of Michigan will recruit four leaders in artificial
intelligence-related research, as part of a cluster of new AI-related
positions in the Departments of Linguistics, Psychology, Philosophy,
and Psychiatry. All four faculty will also have the opportunity to
affiliate with the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science.
We seek outstanding applicants with a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a
related field whose research engages with artificial intelligence in
linguistics and language cognition research. We encourage candidates
who apply computational methods to linguistic research and engage with
different perspectives on the contributions and implications of
artificial intelligence, including generative AI, for linguistics. The
rank and specific subfield(s) of specialization in Linguistics are
open. Successful applicants are expected to hold a Ph.D. degree before
the start of the appointment.
Applicants should provide evidence of a productive research record and
show potential for external funding of their research program. The
successful candidate is expected to contribute to curriculum
development in their areas of expertise, and teach and mentor
undergraduate and graduate students in Linguistics.
Application Deadline: 08-Oct-2025
Web Address for Applications: https://apply.interfolio.com/171006
Application Instructions:
Applicants are asked to submit:
- a letter of application
- a curriculum vitae

- contact information for three recommenders. Recommenders for an
initial shortlist of applicants will be contacted later to submit
recommendations online
Review of dossiers is expected to begin on October 8; applications
received after October 8 may not receive full consideration.
Employment will require a successful criminal background check and may
require an institutional reference check regarding any misconduct.
Candidates may be required to submit a self-disclosure form as well as
an authorization to release information form, and must meet all degree
requirements prior to the start date of the position. The University
