Subject: The Bloomsbury Handbook of Cultural Linguistics and the Environmental Discourse
In response to the urgent need to set ecological awareness and
environment protection as our global priority in all domains, we would
like to announce a call for papers that would underscore the role of
language and culture in shaping environmental thought and action.
Following the premise that Cultural Linguistics as an
interdisciplinary field can offer a deeper insight into the
interactions between language, culture and the social world (Baranyiné
Kóczy & Szelid 2024, Baranyiné Kóczy et al. 2024), and that exploring
the features of human languages that encode collective cultural
conceptualizations (Sharifian 2017) offer a deeper and more holistic
understanding of the world we live in, we believe that how we talk
about nature deeply influences how we treat it. For these reasons, it
is important to address the linguistic and cultural dimensions of
environmental issues and tailor environmental communication to align
with culturally grounded worldviews. In addition to that, it has to be
noted that language as such is also a form of ecological wisdom and
consequently linguistic diversity has to be protected and respected.
Key concepts and dominant environmental discourses have already been
widely discussed in the field of ecolinguistics and a wide range of
perspectives (Fill & Mühlhäuser 2001, Alexander 2009, Steffensen &
Fill 2009, Stibbe 20121, 2022), however, not from the perspective of
cultural linguistics.
This volume aims to bring together interdisciplinary research
that highlights how linguistic and cultural frameworks influence
perceptions of the natural world and environmental relationships. For
the proposal, we ask that you submit a maximum 250-word abstract (not
including references) for your chapter in docx format. In the
document, please include your name, title, email, and affiliation. The
proposal should clearly indicate the area of focus for the chapter and
briefly convey the main ideas to be presented. It should be evident in
the proposal that the chapter will focus. Contributions may adopt
theoretical, descriptive, or applied perspectives and are encouraged
to engage with insights from cognitive linguistics, ecolinguistics,
linguistic anthropology, discourse studies, semiotics, and related
fields. We welcome proposals that address, but are not limited to, the
following key themes:
• Cultural models of nature and environment in language
• (Cultural) Metaphors and metonymies for natural phenomena
• Indigenous ecological knowledge and linguistic expression
• The role of language in environmental ethics and worldviews
• Lexicalization of ecological categories and biodiversity
• Narratives of place, land, and ecology in oral and written
traditions
• Eco-semiotics and nature representation in multimodal
discourse
• Language shift, loss, and ecological knowledge erosion
• Intersections of sustainability discourse and cultural
linguistics
• Cross-cultural differences in conceptualizing animals,
weather, landscapes, and ecological systems
