Description:
We are seeking an Assistant professor, Associate professor or
Professor in the field of English linguistics.
Research environment
The professorship of English linguistics is located in the Languages
Unit in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication
Sciences. The ITC Faculty offers a unique multidisciplinary
environment for research and teaching in this position. In addition to
the strong representation of research in humanities and especially
languages, a broad range of research groups in other disciplines in
the faculty offer a stimulating and inspiring environment for a
potential applicant to excel in their own area. Internationally
well-established research groups in areas such as robotics, virtual
and augmented reality, computational modeling of language learning,
the use of language in machine learning and machine perception, games,
visual journalism, audio description), usability and accessibility
issues, information studies, communication, and performing arts create
an exceptional and vibrant community for interdisciplinary
collaboration.
The Languages Unit explores the intricacies of human interaction and
communication in and across different languages. In line with the
profile of Tampere University, research in the Languages Unit and its
multidisciplinary research centre Plural emphasizes societal aspects
of language, culture and literature. The linguistics research
conducted in the unit focuses on the functions of language in society
and the challenges of cultural and linguistic diversity. BA and MA
teaching in the unit is organized within the Degree Programme in
Languages that provides students with in-depth expertise in the areas
of language, literature and translation. Students can major in
English, Finnish, Swedish, German and Russian. PhD education is
organized within the Doctoral Programme in Language Studies, which is
part of the Doctoral School of Tampere University. The English section
is the largest section in the unit, currently offering four
specialisations at the MA and PhD level: linguistics, literature,
translation and interpreting, and technical communication.
Job description
We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a strong foundation in
English linguistics and high potential for internationally competitive
research in the field. We invite applications from scholars who bring
creative and forward-looking approaches to the study of language in
society. We welcome candidates whose work indicates vision for
developing research in the field. The professor of English linguistics
will join a collaborative research community eager to delve into
current societal issues through the lens of language studies. The
successful candidate is expected to show initiative in launching
research projects and developing the research community. We are
particularly interested in applicants who can benefit from the unique
combination of disciplines in the faculty and can innovatively
contribute to English linguistics utilizing the exceptional
opportunities that this environment offers.
The primary field of teaching and supervision linked to the position
is English linguistics. We seek candidates who demonstrate experience
and broad aptitude in research-based teaching and thesis supervision
in this field. At the same time, we appreciate applicants who, in
addition, exhibit a willingness and potential to contribute to
teaching and supervision in the degree and doctoral programmes of the
unit more broadly across language sections.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate leadership experience and/or
potential. The successful candidate will be expected to assume
academic leadership responsibilities that are appropriate to the level
of the appointment. These can include leading and developing
research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision
in the degree and doctoral programmes of the Unit; setting up and
leading a research team funded by external grants; providing academic
leadership through mentoring colleagues, coordinating research
initiatives, or contributing to strategic development; and engaging in
outreach that connects academic work with societal needs.

Assistant Professor
We require:
- applicable doctoral degree
- ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to
pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence
- teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and
functions of the position
Associate Professor
We require:
- applicable doctoral degree
- track record of independent scholarly activity
- teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and
functions of the position
- ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding
- track record of international scholarly activity
Professor
We require:
- applicable doctoral degree
- high-level international scholarly expertise
- experience in leading research
- ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and
instruction
- track record of winning external research funding
- track record of international scholarly activity
We will expect you to demonstrate how your profile aligns with the
strategy of Tampere University, with the profile of the Faculty of
Information Technology and Communication Sciences and the research
profile of the Languages Unit, and to describe how you would work in a
multidisciplinary environment.
