Journal: Polonia Journal
Issue: Various aspects of language and communication
Call Deadline: 20-Sep-2025

Undoubtedly, one of the main functions of language is communication,
both in the native and in a foreign language. This entails a number of
skills, which can be taught, learnt and applied in different ways and
contexts. Nowadays, in the era of globalisation and increased
mobility, knowledge of English is often indispensable, while that of
other foreign languages constitutes an additional asset. However,
communicative competence is more complex than one might think and
includes both linguistic and intercultural competence, which is
especially important in international contexts, such as business,
diplomacy or tourism. In addition, professional communication often
requires knowledge of underlying technical, legal, medical,
scientific, etc. concepts, which may be expressed differently in
different languages.
Moreover, communication also involves gestures, images, as well as
non-verbal sounds. They are also relevant to intercultural
communication and differences between gestures can lead to
misunderstandings as much as differences between the languages
involved can. Since images and symbols evoke various associations,
they can communicate certain meanings in art, cinema, advertising,
etc., both on a national and an international scale.
Examples of article topics (the list is not exhaustive):
1. Language learning and teaching: language teaching methodology,
materials, technology in language teaching, language learning
strategies, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, etc.

possible misunderstandings in intercultural communication.

cultural elements and culture-specific terms in literary and
non-literary translation (e.g. in tourist brochures, museum
descriptions, etc.).
9. Intercultural differences in the perception of literature and
films. Cultural allusions in literature and films.
10. Music as a form of communication. Rhetorical appeals in songs.
