Description:
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Humanities
at the University of Arizona seeks to fill a career-track position at
the rank of Associate Professor of Practice in Portuguese with a
specialization in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching to begin
August 2025. The successful candidate will direct the Portuguese
Language program and teach all levels of undergraduate courses in
Portuguese in all modalities (in-person, hybrid, online).
Candidates should provide evidence of teaching excellence, experience
with curriculum development, and ability to work effectively with
faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds. A Ph.D. in
Second Language Acquisition, Portuguese (Applied) Linguistics,
Portuguese, or a related field is required.
The successful candidate will play a leading role in promoting and
strengthening Portuguese language instruction, supervising graduate
student assistants, collaborating with the Portuguese Flagship
Program, developing course offerings and program visibility, and
continuing to develop, implement, and assess a comprehensive language
curriculum that aligns with contemporary pedagogical practices. We are
especially interested in someone who will help us recruit and increase
our number of Portuguese minors and Spanish majors with a
specialization in Portuguese. Superior proficiency in English and
Portuguese is required. Review of candidates will begin on March 7,
2025.
This is not a remote position. As such, the successful candidate will
be expected to work at the Main Campus in Tucson, AZ. This
career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct the Portuguese Language Program
- Teach a maximum of six undergraduate courses a year in all
modalities (in-person, hybrid, online).  Course releases would be
granted according to the needs of the department
- Train and supervise Graduate Assistants in Teaching (GAT) and
instructors in the Portuguese Language Program, including leading GAT
orientation and regular meetings for the professionalization of GATs
- Develop and periodically review a curriculum that aligns student
learning outcomes and objectives with assessment of course sequences
- Actively recruit and assist in recruiting Portuguese minors, Spanish
majors with a specialization in Portuguese, and graduate students
- Contribute to departmental, college, and university service
- Participate in Departmental and College-wide activities such as Meet
Your Major Fair, Study Abroad Fair, Language Fair, Convocation,
Welcome Back receptions, Homecoming, the Tucson Humanities Festival
and promotion of Arizona in Salvador da Bahia study abroad program
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated student-centered pedagogical knowledge; ability to
serve the 21st-century educational needs
- Superior communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to teach a variety of Portuguese undergraduate courses
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition, Portuguese (Applied)
Linguistics, Portuguese, or a related field
- Superior proficiency in Portuguese and English
- Experience recruiting and retaining undergraduate majors
- Experience teaching college-level Portuguese with a record of
teaching excellence
- Evidence of teaching innovation and experience with technology for
effective language teaching
- Knowledge of teaching methods and teaching experience of Portuguese
for Spanish speakers
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with program administration
- Interest in the summer study abroad programs
- Experience with second language testing and assessment
