Call for Chapters: The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Translation
(Revised Edition, 2027)

We are pleased to announce the call for chapters for the revised
edition of The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Translation, scheduled
for publication in 2027. Building on the foundation of the 2017
edition, the revised volume aims to reflect the latest developments,
research trends, and innovations in Chinese translation studies. We
particularly welcome contributions that explore how advancements in
artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping the theory and practice of
Chinese translation across various domains.
Key Themes and Research Threads (but feel free to propose additional
themes):
1. AI and the Human Translator: Evolving Roles in Chinese Translation
Contributions that explore how AI is altering the role of human
translators, focusing on the integration of machine-generated content
and its impact on professional identities within the Chinese
translation landscape.
2. Ethical Considerations in AI-Driven Chinese Translations
Papers addressing the ethical challenges posed by AI in Chinese
translation, including concerns related to bias, privacy, and
accountability in AI systems handling Chinese texts.
3. Reinventing Chinese Translation Pedagogy with AI Tools
Research examining how AI is reshaping translation education, with a
focus on integrating AI into Chinese translation curricula and
developing new skills for future translators in the digital age.
4. Cognitive Dimensions of AI in Translating Chinese Texts
Studies on the cognitive processes involved in post-editing
AI-generated Chinese translations, exploring how AI tools influence
the cognitive load and decision-making of human translators.
5. Redefining Translation Quality Standards in the Age of AI
Contributions that propose new frameworks for evaluating the quality
of AI-generated translations, specifically within the context of
Chinese language texts, and how these align with or challenge
traditional standards.
6. AI and Cross-Cultural Dialogue: The Global Impact of Chinese
Translation Technologies
Research that investigates how AI-driven translations are facilitating
or hindering cross-cultural communication, with a particular emphasis
on the role of Chinese language and culture in the global context.
7. Creativity and AI: Literary Chinese Translation in the Digital Age
Investigations into how AI is influencing the translation of Chinese
literature, examining the creative potentials and limitations of AI in
producing stylistically nuanced translations of Chinese literary
works.
Submission Guidelines:
Proposals should be submitted as an abstract (200-300 words) outlining
the main argument, scope, and structure of the chapter.
The submission should include a brief biography (50-100 words) of the
author(s), highlighting relevant expertise. Maximum Numbers of authors
allowed per chapter: 3.
Proposals should be submitted no later than July 1, 2025.
Full chapters (7,000-9,000 words) will be expected by March 1, 2026.
The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Translation remains an essential
reference for students, scholars, and practitioners interested in
