Since its introduction at INALCO in 1828, the teaching of Urdu in
France has been a major pillar of South Asian studies. However,
despite this long tradition, no major scientific event has been
dedicated to Urdu studies at INALCO. This international conference
aims to fill this gap by bringing together researchers and teachers
around the contemporary challenges of this field of study. One of the
central issues concerns the teaching of Urdu to a non-native speaking
audience in university institutions outside the Indian subcontinent.
While some textbooks have been developed, primarily in the
English-speaking world, pedagogical production remains insufficient in
the face of growing needs. This situation is particularly critical in
East Asia (China, Japan) where teaching often relies on obsolete
pedagogical materials. Moreover, recent orthographic reforms of Urdu
raise important methodological questions regarding their integration
into new teaching materials and their standardization in international
education.
This conference will bring together recognized specialists from
Europe, Asia, and North America, allowing for the creation of lasting
synergies for the future of Urdu studies. It will explore various
themes related to the teaching of Urdu as well as other aspects of the
field, through several main themes:
- Urdu didactics in non-native speaking contexts: methodologies,
materials, innovations
- Issues of orthographic standardization in teaching
- Urdu literature: transmission and reception and its role in teaching
outside the subcontinent
- Comparative linguistics of Urdu and Hindi
- Modern lexicography in Urdu
- Literary and non-literary translation in Urdu
- Historiography in Urdu
- Socio-political and economic dimensions of Urdu studies
Submissions of abstracts for 30-minute presentations (20 minutes for
the paper presentation and 10 minutes for discussion) are welcome.
Abstracts should be in Word format, anonymous, and no more than 300
words in length, and be sent to urdustudies.paris at gmail.com before
June 30, 2025.
The languages of the conference are French, Urdu and English. It is
requested to use for the PowerPoint presentation a language different
from the one used for the oral presentation. The abstract must be
written in one of the three languages (French, Urdu or English), but a
translation into French is mandatory if the abstract is not already in
French.
Panel proposals are also welcome. Each panel should be organized
around a coherent research theme with one or two coordinators serving
as panel chairs. Panels may include a maximum of four presenters
(inclusive of the coordinators) and will be allocated a two-hour time
slot, with 20-30 minutes reserved for audience discussion and
engagement. Panel proposals should include a comprehensive overview of
the research theme, brief biographical information of all
participants, and abstracts of individual presentations. All
submissions will undergo review by the scientific committee. The
organizers look forward to receiving innovative panel proposals that
advance Urdu studies across diverse scholarly domains.
This conference is restricted exclusively to academics and individuals
with established credentials within scholarly domains.
