Subject: Language Science Fair: Event at Planet Word museum in Washington DC


Linguists and language enthusiasts in the Washington DC area may be
interested in attending this upcoming free event at Planet Word museum
in Washington DC. The Language Science Fair is an event for the
general public featuring activities, talks, puzzles, crafts, and
prizes, all about language science! Hosted by the Language Science
Station at Planet Word, the Fair brings together scientists and
curious minds to celebrate how language works, from the way we produce
and perceive language, to how we learn and communicate.
Event Details:
Date: Saturday, May 10, 2025
Time: 10 am - 2 pm
Location: Planet Word Museum, Washington, D.C.
Cost: Tickets are free. Reserve ahead of time, or walk up on the day
of the event

American Sign Language interpretation will be available
Through hands-on activities throughout the museum, visitors can learn
more about how language works, how language is studied scientifically,
and how society benefits from language science research. For example,
you’ll encounter:
A trivia challenge against a robot
Demonstrations about sign languages
Early examples of AAC devices
Interactive displays on regional dialects
Brain imaging demonstrations about speech perception
Opportunities to contribute to real research studies
And much more, including talks, a puzzle room, crafts, and prizes!
Throughout the day, local experts will present short public talks in
the Planet Word auditorium, covering topics such as:
What neuroscience reveals about code-switching
How and why accents change
What dogs understand about language
The differences between AI language models and human learning

The Fair has something for everyone: children, teens, college
students, and adults. Join us at the Language Science Fair to have
fun, learn something new, and meet local scientists from the
University of Maryland, Gallaudet University, Georgetown University,
George Mason University, and George Washington University.
The Language Science Fair is part of a nationwide series of STEM Day
events recognizing the 75th Anniversary of the National Science
Foundation. The Language Science Station and the University of
Maryland’s Language Science Center are proud to host the Language
Science Fair in celebration of NSF’s contributions to the scientific
study of language.
