Open call - EDIMA
Context and Objectives
EDIMA, the IMA’s School of Didactics, is an initiative launched in
2023 by Arabic Language and Civilization Centre [CLCA] of the Institut
du Monde Arabe [IMA]. It gathers international figures in the teaching
of Arabic as a foreign language. One of EDIMA’s long-term objectives
is to create and maintain an international network of Arabic language
teaching experts – researchers and field practitioners.
For its 3rd edition, to be held in the autumn of 2025, EDIMA aims to
explore the teaching of Arabic to young non-native learners and
heritage speakers in all its aspects.
The teaching of Arabic as a foreign language to young allophone
learners or heritage speakers presents many challenges, particularly
when linguistic immersion and/or the use of standard Arabic in the
family context are inaccessible. Among these challenges: adapting
resources, dialects and their varieties, teaching methodologies, using
digital tools to foster engagement and motivation among young
learners, etc.
This open call for contributions thus focuses on new theoretical
approaches in the field and innovations in classroom practices.
Contributors will be didactics researchers, practitioners,
researchers, students in Arabic didactics, or field teachers.
Note: The selected practical contributions will be implemented in
workshops or dedicated conferences during the autumn school.
This 3rd edition of the Autumn School will be organized around the
following themes:
Theme 1: Teaching Arabic to Young Learners
 - Teaching Arabic to young allophone learners.
 - Teaching Arabic to heritage speakers in a diasporic context:
studying the challenges and opportunities related to teaching Arabic
in the context of multilingualism, with a focus on France.
 - Understanding the diverse cultural backgrounds of students to adapt
teaching methods and promote an inclusive environment.
 - Intercultural approaches aimed at young learners.
 - Curricular approaches and language policies for young learners:
reflecting on language policies concerning the teaching of Arabic to
children, including the development and implementation of the language
in school curricula.
 - Communicative Arabic for children.
Teacher training: analysis of initial and continuing education
programs for Arabic teachers, focusing on the specific skills required
to teach children.
Arabic children’s literature, a powerful tool for stimulating
learning: why use children’s literature and albums in the classroom?
How to exploit albums (pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading
activities) in a language class?
Impact of media and technology: studying the influence of media,
social networks, and modern technologies on young learners: challenges
and perspectives.
Assessment of language skills: reflecting on the tools and methods of
assessment suitable for measuring the progress of young learners in
class.
Theme 2: Varia
 - Teaching the four skills of Arabic in the classroom.
 - The cultural aspects that should be highlighted considering the new
realities of the "Arab world(s)" after 2011.
Terms and Conditions:
Contributions may be carried out by researchers, organizations
specializing in the field of Arabic language teaching, or Arabic
teachers affiliated with educational institutions. Teachers are
strongly encouraged to respond to this open call.
Applications must be submitted no later than June 1, 2025.
Contributions submitted after this date will not be considered.
Applications can be submitted in Arabic, French, or English. As a
reminder, during the first two editions of EDIMA, discussions were
conducted in Arabic, with the aim of prioritizing Arabic as the
language of knowledge in the field of language didactics.
Evaluation Criteria:
Innovation : originality of the proposed approaches
Impact: measurability and potential reach of the contribution
Viability: practical and economic feasibility of the proposed
techniques
Replicability: possibility of adapting and extending the proposed
approaches/techniques to different regions or cultures
Deadline for Submission of Proposals:
June 1, 2025
Results:
July 15, 2025
Practical Submission Guidelines
