Call for submissions:
Currently, we are in the process of editing a forthcoming publication
entitled "The Downfall of
Language Education: The Decline and (possible) Revival of European
Language Programs in North American Universities". This volume will be
published by "Cambridge Scholars", edited by Marco Lettieri and
Sven-Ole Andersen.
In recent years, many North American universities have witnessed a
troubling decline in enrollment across a range of language programs,
with particular emphasis on European languages such as French, German,
Italian and Portuguese. Even English departments are concerned. This
decline has led to the shuttering of once-thriving language
departments, leaving many scholars, educators, and students concerned
about the future of these vital fields. The reasons behind this
phenomenon are complex and multifaceted, involving a combination of
shifting student interests, economic pressures, curricular
restructuring, and the evolving global dynamics of language learning.
However, despite the urgency of this situation, there remains a lack
of comprehensive, cross-disciplinary dialogue on how to both
understand and address this crisis within the academic landscape
We are particularly interested in submissions that describe and
analyze the systemic problems as well as those of the institution at
which you are teaching. Moreover, we would like to have an honest
discussion and suggestions for hands-on approaches on how to halt the
trend of decline and elimination of language departments. We cordially
invite you to submit a one page abstract for consideration in this
publication.
If you are interested in contributing to this collection, please send
a one-page abstract of your essay to MARCOGILDO.LETTIERI at UPR.EDU by
May 31st, 2025.
The projected deadline for your contribution will likely be October
30, 2025.
