Journal: ESP Today
Issue: Extended Reality in English for Specific Purposes Teaching and
Learning in Tertiary Education
Call Deadline: 01-Aug-2025

Call for Papers:
We invite submissions for a special issue of ESP Today dedicated to
the theme of “Extended Reality in English for Specific Purposes
Teaching and Learning in Tertiary Education.” This special issue aims
to explore the transformative potential of extended reality (XR)
technologies – including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR),
and mixed reality (MR) – in enhancing language learning and
communication skills within tertiary education settings, with a
particular focus on English for Specific Purposes (ESP).
XR technologies are increasingly recognized for their ability to
create immersive and interactive learning environments, offering
learners opportunities to engage with authentic, contextually rich
scenarios (Madini & Alshaikhi, 2017). For tertiary-level students,
particularly
those engaged in ESP, XR can simulate professional communication
tasks, support the acquisition of field-specific terminology, and
provide experiential learning opportunities that are otherwise
difficult to replicate in traditional classroom settings (Coleman &
Derry, 2023;
Radianti et al., 2020; Ngo & Hastie, 2025).
This special issue seeks to bring together theoretical, empirical, and
practical perspectives on the use of XR in tertiary language
education, addressing the opportunities and challenges posed by this
rapidly evolving field.
We welcome original research articles on topics including but not
limited to:
 • Theoretical frameworks for integrating XR into ESP/EAP teaching and
learning in tertiary education;
 • Case studies of XR implementation in specific ESP/EAP contexts;
 • XR technologies as tools for developing intercultural communication
competence in ESP/EAP settings;
 • Ethical and policy considerations for deploying XR in tertiary
education;
 • Other relevant topics.
Abstracts of around 300 words in length (excluding references),
clearly outlining the scope of research, methodology, and expected
results, should be submitted by 1 August 2025 to both Patrizia Anesa
(patrizia.anesa at unibg.it) and Cinzia Giglioni
(cinzia.giglioni at uniroma1.it).
Authors will be notified of the acceptance/rejection of their proposal
by 15 August 2025. Full text papers (max. 8,500 words in length
excluding references) should be submitted by 1 December 2025 and
should closely follow the Instructions to Authors specified by ESP
Today
(http://www.esptodayjournal.org/esp_today_instructions.html).
All contributions will be submitted to a double-blind peer review
process. Authors will be notified of the acceptance/rejection of their
submitted manuscripts not later than 10 January 2026 and will be asked
to revise their papers in line with the review reports. The final
version of the submitted papers will be published in the June 2026
special issue of ESP Today.
