Dear all,
We’re thrilled to announce a new attempt to launch our groundbreaking
Master’s programme in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) at the
Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) — often called “Complutense
University” in English! This programme is designed for a global
audience, delivered entirely online with instruction in English,
making it accessible to learners worldwide.
Why Choose This Programme?
This programme is unique, being the first Master’s programme entirely
focussed on SFL as an appliable resource for engaging with language in
context and other semiotic systems:
• Expert Faculty from Around the World: Learn from leading SFL
scholars who bring diverse expertise and perspectives.
• Tailored guidance: Work with one of a wide range of SFL scholars to
develop your Master’s thesis, as part of the global community of
participants.
• Global Accessibility: Study form any anywhere in the world, thanks
to the online format, which ensures flexibility and enables you to
form global study groups.
• Comprehensive Curriculum: Dive deep into SFL theory, applications,
and cutting-edge research across various contexts.
• Empowerment Through Knowledge: Build expert skills in text analysis,
corpus studies, and linguistic system descriptions to tackle
real-world challenges.
Coordinated by Jorge Arús-Hita and Christian M.I.M. Matthiessen, this
programme reflects UCM’s strong support for SFL and its commitment to
academic excellence. Together, we have curated a curriculum that
balances theoretical foundations with practical applications, ensuring
a rich learning experience. We have designed the programme so that it
can also support current or future PhD studies, helping with
development of research projects: your Master’s thesis can serve as a
pilot study preparing you to undertake a larger PhD project.
Programme Highlights
>From the official description:

cultural contexts. Whether analysing small text samples or large
corpora, you’ll gain both expert scientific insights and actionable
skills.
