Subject: One position for a 3-year full-time PhD in TESOL with emphasis on speech acquisition, or AI, or machine learning


The Department of Languages and Literature of the University of
Nicosia offers one (1) position for a 3-year full-time PhD in TESOL in
one of the following topics:
-Perception and production of English sounds by nonnative learners of
English
-Utilization of AI-driven applications to enhance the perception and
production of English sounds
-Machine learning trained with acoustic features for the
classification of English learners
The prospective student will work under the Phonetic Lab
https://www.unic.ac.cy/phonetic-lab/. The PhD will be supervised by Dr
Georgios (George) Georgiou, Assistant Professor in Linguistics. For

Eligibility criteria
-Accredited Master’s degree in TESOL, or Applied Linguistics, or
English Language/Linguistics from a reputable university
-Teaching experience of least one year
-Evidence of English language proficiency equivalent to C1–C2 (e.g.,
Cambridge exams, IELTS, TOEFL, etc.)
Benefits for the students
-They can complete their PhD in 3 years.
-They can be overseas and research their local context (it may be
necessary – on occasion – to come to Cyprus as and when required,
e.g., for exams, the viva, training, etc.).
-They will receive explicit guidance from the supervisor on the
preparation of experiments, statistics, the dissertation, etc.
-They will engage in high-quality research and publish their findings
in reputable journals under the guidance of their supervisor.
-They will have the opportunity to present their work at international
conferences, seminars, and workshops.
-They will strengthen their CVs and expand their collaborative
networks by participating in the Phonetic Lab.

words, excluding references) outlining the research topic, aim and
