We're happy to announce that the Third Edition of the Dictionary of
Canadianisms on Historical Principles was published on 15 May 2025.
You can find the new edition, DCHP-3, online at:
http://dchp.ca/dchp3
(The older editions can be accessed at http://dchp.ca/dchp2 and
http://dchp.ca/dchp1).
The Third Edition is a major technical upgrade and a more minor
editorial update.
We’ve added 136 terms and 187 new meanings of Canadianisms to this
edition, many of which are mentioned in the introduction
(https://dchp.arts.ubc.ca/about). A Canadianism is "a word,
expression, or meaning which is native to [what is now] Canada or
which is distinctively characteristic of Canadian usage though not
necessarily exclusive to Canada" (Walter S. Avis 1967). DCHP-3 is
therefore a comparative project in a pluricentric framework. It would
have been easy to add more terms, but it’s always better to have a
non-comprehensive published historical dictionary than an unpublished
comprehensive one.
In total DCHP-3 lists more than 15,000 meanings for more than 12,000
lexemes.
As exciting as completing DCHP-3 is our close cooperation with the new
Canadian English Dictionary (https://canadianenglishdictionary.ca),
under the editorship of John Chew, which is to be expected by 2028.
We hope you’ll find DCHP-3, in its mobile-friendly (fast!) guise,
stimulating in your deliberations about the idea of Canada and its
reflection in Canadian English in particular and in language more
generally.
We welcome review and critique, including in peer-reviewed
publications.
