Journal: Applied Corpus Linguistics
Issue: Corpus-based Approaches to Lx Morphosyntactic Acquisition
Call Deadline: 30-Jun-2026

The special issue (SI) explores corpus-based approaches to
morphosyntactic acquisition in non-dominant, additional languages
(Lx)—including second, foreign, and heritage languages. The proposed
SI highlights data curation, technological innovation, and Open
Science/Research practices, with the aim of advancing large-scale,
transparent research on Lx morphosyntax across diverse typological and
sociolinguistic contexts. Closely aligned with the mission of Applied
Corpus Linguistics, this SI aims to foster intellectual synergy and
advance multidisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of corpus
linguistics, Lx acquisition, and Artificial Intelligence, while
promoting communication within the broader applied corpus linguistics
research community.
We invite interested contributors to submit a letter of intent
outlining their proposed work and explaining how it aligns with the
theme and focus of this special issue, particularly with regard to its
applied linguistics orientation. Potential submissions may include,
but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Data and infrastructure: Development of morphosyntactically
annotated corpora and computational pipelines designed for
(semi-)automatic morphosyntactic processing and analysis, with
particular attention to under-resourced Lx contexts and/or
less-studied language use domains (e.g., spoken interaction; digital
communication)
- Technological applications: Applications of LLMs and NLP techniques
to corpus-based investigations of Lx morphosyntactic patterns, with an
emphasis on open and reproducible research practices (e.g., public
release of processing tools)
- Research design and evaluation: Methodological innovations in
corpus-based research on Lx morphosyntactic acquisition, including
novel data-elicitation and statistical techniques, practical
guidelines/tutorials for corpus collection, annotation, and evaluation
(e.g., inter-rater reliability between annotators)
Timeline:
- Letter of Intent Submission Deadline: 31 January 2026 (to Guest
Editors)
- Full Manuscript Submission Deadline: 30 June 2026 (via the Applied
Corpus Linguistics submission system)
- Final Decision (after peer-review and revisions): 31 December 2026
- Planned Publication Date: March 2027
