We are pleased to announce the next TaLC conference, which will take
place at University of Extremadura. The conference will be held in
Jarandilla de la Vera, a village within the La Vera district, north of
the province of Cáceres, approximately 200 kilometers from Madrid. As
summers in this part of Spain are typically very hot, the conference
will instead take place in this area of Extremadura. Surrounded by
mountains, valleys, gorges, and natural swimming pools, it offers a
cooler and more pleasant environment, ensuring a comfortable and
enjoyable experience for participants. In this village, the university
provides modern facilities and a fully equipped residence hall, making
it an ideal setting for an event of this kind.
Central Theme:
As one key objective, we would like to bring together engaging talks,
discussions, and academic exchanges about the convergence of corpus
linguistics and Generative AI (GenAI) tools for language education and
linguistic analysis.
Over the past decades, corpus linguistics has transformed the way we
study and teach languages. By analyzing different collections of
authentic texts, researchers and educators have uncovered insightful
patterns of how people use languages in different contexts. This
data-driven approach has undoubtedly enriched our understanding of
different aspects of grammar, vocabulary, and discourses in written
and spoken communication as well as provided practical tools for
creating effective learning materials and activities.
Now, with the rapid spread of generative AI tools for many purposes,
we are entering a new era. We are witnessing key strengths and
weaknesses for corpus linguistics, data-driven learning, and
linguistic analyses with these intersecting technologies. For example,
GenAI can generate texts instantly, offer interactive practice and
learner adaptability, and simulate real-life communication scenarios.
However, important questions are raised: How accurate, verifiable, and
reliable are AI-generated texts? What role should teachers and
researchers play when machines can “teach” too? How do we make sure
learners develop authentic language skills, rather than just relying
on technology?
This TaLC conference thus aims to bring together scholars, educators,
and AI experts to explore different issues derived from this exciting
and challenging intersection of corpus linguistics and AI. Together,
we can explore more extensively how these tools are reshaping the
study and teaching of languages, and what this means for the future of
corpus linguistics, language learning, and education. The aim is to
spark discussion, share innovative practices, and imagine the next
steps in a field where data, learners, and technology are more
connected than ever.
