International Conference will be held at the University of Cádiz from
6-8 May 2026.
Following on from the success of previous editions held in Cambridge,
Vigo and Basel, this conference aims to continue raising awareness and
provide a forum for the growing interest in Gibraltar studies. Its
proximity to Gibraltar makes Cádiz an ideal setting and springboard
from which to explore and learn firsthand about the Rock. This event
seeks to bring together scholars, researchers, and postgraduate
students from diverse fields, including linguistics, literary studies,
history and cultural studies to examine Gibraltar’s unique heritage
and landscape.
We invite papers in English that engage critically with, but are not
limited to, the following themes:
Language and Linguistics:
- Llanito (Yanito): Studies on its structure, evolution,
sociolinguistics, and cultural significance.
- Code-switching and code-mixing in Gibraltarian speech and writing.
- Languages in contact: the role of English and Spanish in
Gibraltarian society, education, and media.
- Language policy, preservation, and education in Gibraltar.
- The impact of technology and digital communication on Gibraltarian
language use.
- Historical linguistics and the origins of Gibraltarian speech.
Literature and Culture:
- The Gibraltarian literary canon and emerging voices.
- Representations of identity, nationhood, and border dynamics in
literature.
- Writers from Gibraltar in Spanish, English, or bilingual contexts.
- The Rock as a setting, metaphor, or character in literature.
- Literary interactions with Spanish, British, and Mediterranean
traditions.
- The role of oral traditions, music, and performance in Gibraltarian
culture.
- Postcolonial and decolonial readings of Gibraltarian texts.
