About the Journal:
Studies on Indigenous African Signed and Spoken Languages (SIASSL) is
a peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing
scholarship on the description, documentation, and revitalization of
Indigenous African languages—both signed and spoken.
The journal is published by the Indigenous Hands and Voices (IHAV) and
serves as a platform for original research that highlights the
richness, diversity, and vitality of African linguistic traditions.
Our mission is to promote rigorous, inclusive, and decolonial
linguistic inquiry that centers African epistemologies, communities,
and languages in academic discourse.
Call for Papers:
We invite scholars, researchers, practitioners, and community-based
linguists to submit original manuscripts for publication in our
upcoming issue.
We welcome theoretical, descriptive, and applied work on topics
relating to Indigenous African Signed and Spoken Languages.
Possible areas of submission include (but are not limited to):
Signed Languages
 - Documentation and description of Indigenous African sign languages
 - Lexicography, grammar, and discourse structures in African signed
languages
 - Sign language contact, endogenization, and variation
 - Deaf culture, education, and linguistic identity in African
contexts
 - Technology, policy, and accessibility for African sign language
users
 - Sign Language acquisition
Spoken Languages
 - Phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of African
languages
 - Historical and comparative studies of language families and areal
features
 - Language contact, multilingualism, and code-switching
 - Language policy, planning, and revitalization
 - Corpus linguistics and digital documentation of Indigenous African
languages
 - Language acquisition
Interdisciplinary Perspectives
 - Language, culture, and cognition
 - Language and identity in postcolonial Africa
 - Ethnolinguistics and oral traditions
 - Computational, sociocultural, or anthropological linguistics
 - Language and inclusion in education and development
 - Speech, Language Therapy
Submission Guidelines
 - Manuscripts should be original and not under consideration
elsewhere.
 - Length: Typically, 6,000–8,000 words (excluding references). Short
reports, field notes, and book reviews are also welcome.
 - Format: Microsoft Word or PDF, double-spaced, 12-point Times New
Roman.
 - Referencing style: APA (7th edition).
 - Languages of publication: English.
 - Peer Review: All submissions undergo double-blind peer review.
