This talk will unpack some of the myths around the asylum system,
highlight ways in which the English language is being used both as a
gatekeeping tool of migration policy and demonstrate how politicians
are using language to scapegoat and “other” migrants. It will then
examine the importance of language education in promoting integration
and inclusion and point to ways in which a multi-lingual approach to
language education can foster a greater sense of belonging amongst
migrants in Wales.
BIO
Professor Mike Chick has worked in language teaching for over
twenty-five years. At the University of South Wales, he is a TESOL
teacher education lecturer and is the University Refugee Champion. His
research interests surround language education for migrants in Wales
and he is currently researching social justice and language education.
Working with the Learning and Work Institute, he recently completed a
review for the Welsh Government of its migrant language education
provision across the country.

Yna bydd yn archwilio pwysigrwydd addysg iaith wrth hyrwyddo
integreiddio a chynhwysiant ac yn tynnu sylw at ffyrdd y gall ymagwedd
amlieithog at addysg iaith feithrin ymdeimlad gwell o berthyn ymhlith
mewnfudwyr yng Nghymru.
