Subject: Call for Book Chapter Proposals - Culinary Linguistics: Taste, Language, and Identity in Transcultural Contexts
Chapter proposals are invited for an edited volume titled Culinary
Linguistics: Taste, Language, and Identity in Transcultural Contexts.
This volume aims to foreground linguistic, semiotic, and discursive
perspectives on culinary contexts. The focus is on how language
constructs, mediates, and negotiates meaning in food-related settings,
rather than on food as a cultural object in itself. Contributions are
expected to address the role of language in shaping identity,
multilingual practices, linguistic ideologies, multimodal
communication, and sensory meaning-making in culinary environments.
Possible areas of exploration include, but are not limited to:
- Semiotics of taste, flavour metaphors, and sensory meaning-making
- Culinary discourse and identity construction
- Multilingual practices in food-related settings: code-switching,
translanguaging, translation
- Menu linguistics and the linguistic landscapes of food spaces
- Authenticity and culinary ideology as discursive constructs
- Gendered, classed, or racialised language surrounding food practices
- Digital and computational food discourse (#foodporn, influencer
narratives, AI-generated menus)
- Multimodal analysis of food packaging, branding, menus, and online
content
All submissions must adopt a linguistics-, semiotics-, or
discourse-based approach.
Submission Guidelines-
Please submit:
- A working title
- Author name(s) and affiliation(s)
- A 300 word abstract outlining the proposed chapter’s research focus,
theoretical framework, methodology and contribution
- A short biographical note (approximately 100 words)
Abstracts should be sent to: culinarylinguistics at zohomail.in
Deadline for abstract submission: 15 December 2025
Submission of full chapters (ca. 7000 words): Full manuscripts will
likely be due in the second half of 2026, following review and
acceptance of the proposal.
