We are organising a Special Issue in the Journal Language Acquisition
to celebrate Stephen Crain’s remarkable contributions to child
language research on his 80th birthday.
His pioneering and innovative approaches (including the Truth Value
Judgment Task) to studying child language have opened new frontiers in
linguistics, addressing complex methodological challenges and laying
the foundation for child language research within the theory of
Universal Grammar. Over the last few decades, Stephen has made
outstanding contributions to our understanding of children’s
acquisition of semantic knowledge, in particular young children’s
knowledge of logical expressions. Much of his work has been
cross-linguistic research, with a particular focus on the comparison
between English-speaking and Mandarin-speaking children. This Special
Issue will serve as a tribute to Stephen’s lifelong dedication to the
empirical assessment of the theory of Universal Grammar using child
language and will feature a collection of articles, reviews, and
research papers.
We invite researchers and scholars from around the world to contribute
to this Special Issue, sharing their own insights and discoveries
inspired by Stephen’s work. This collective effort will showcase
theory-motivated child language research that has important bearings
on our understanding of the nature of human language. We encourage you
to participate in this tribute to Stephen and to celebrate the
profound influence he has had in the field. Please submit your
abstract and manuscript according to the following schedule to be
considered for inclusion in this Special Issue.
Tentative Completion Schedule
Abstract Submission Deadline: 20 December 2025
Notification of Abstract Acceptance: 4 January 2026
Full Manuscript Deadline: 1 April 2026
We request that, prior to submitting a manuscript, interested authors
initially submit a proposed title and an abstract of 200 words
summarizing their intended contribution. Please send it to the guest
editors Peng Zhou (zhoupeng1892 at zju.edu.cn) and Maria Teresa Guasti
(mariateresa.guasti at unimib.it). Abstracts will be reviewed by the
guest editors for the purposes of ensuring proper fit within the scope
of the Special Issue. Full manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer
review.
We look forward to celebrating Stephen’s 80th birthday and his legacy
in child language research through this Special Issue.
