The Research Group Monumenta Linguae Vasconum (MLV) and the University
of the Basque Country are pleased to announce that the First
International Conference on the History of Basque (ICHB1) will take
place next week in Gasteiz, from 25–27 November 2025.
The first quarter of this century has been a productive period for the
study of the history of the Basque language, marked by significant
advances in text editing, historical dialectology, and linguistic
reconstruction, among other areas. Historical Basque linguistics has
engaged with new theoretical perspectives, while newly discovered
texts have provided fresh insights. The combination of these two
pillars has led to major progress in understanding the history of the
Basque language.
With the aspiration of establishing a long-term tradition, this
conference aims to bring together the latest contributions in these
fields. The inaugural edition will place special emphasis on
historical dialectology and textual studies, while also welcoming
research from other related areas. To this end, the Monumenta Linguae
Vasconum research group has organized a three-day international
conference designed as a meeting point for scholars working on or
interested in the history of Basque.
The conference will be held at the Micaela Portilla Research Center
(Araba Campus), from 9:00 to 17:30.
This year’s theme is “Exploring Texts and Varieties.”
