The Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main is one of the

At the Institute of Linguistics, Faculty of Modern Languages, Goethe
University Frankfurt am Main, within the DFG-funded Priority Programme
(SPP) 2392 “Visual Communication. Theoretical, Empirical and Applied
Perspectives (ViCom, https://vicom.info) ”, the position of a
Research Associate (m/f/d)
(E13 TV-G-U, 75% part time)
is to be filled as of 01.04.2026 and limited until 28.02.2029. The
salary grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective
agreement applicable to Goethe University (TV-G-U).
We are seeking a committed individual to stand in for the SPP
coordinator in teaching and to provide methodological support for
experimental research within the Priority Program. Priority Program
2392 entered its second funding phase at the end of 2025 and comprises
16 research projects as well as a central project, in which this
position is located.
Responsibilities:
Your future responsibilities include:
- scientific research on semantics, pragmatics, and/or experimental
linguistics
- teaching courses (4 hours per week per semester) in the BA and MA
programs in Linguistics in the area of (theoretical) semantics and
pragmatics. The precise content of the seminars will be aligned with
the profile of the position holder; both theoretically oriented and
experimentally/methodologically oriented formats in
semantics/pragmatics are possible. Study-related administrative tasks
associated with teaching (e.g., examinations, advising students) are
part of the position
- experimental and statistical consulting for ViCom projects; in
particular, support with experimental design, data analysis, and
interpretation
- planning and conducting methods-oriented workshops within the SPP;
the specific contents will be aligned with the profile of the position
holder and may include, among other things, descriptive and
inferential statistics, Bayesian statistics, programming for
experimental research (e.g., masking techniques), and methods of
visual communication.
Your Profile:
You should bring the following qualifications:
- completed doctorate (PhD) in Linguistics or a related discipline;
in exceptional cases, applications with a Master’s degree are possible
if special aptitude and extensive experience in experimental/empirical
linguistics and university teaching can be demonstrated.
- focus on (formal) semantics/pragmatics
- experience in experimental/empirial linguistics (e.g.,
psycholinguistic studies, multimodal communication, statistical data
analysis) and familiarity with common software and analysis
environments
- teaching experience in semantics/pragmatics and/or experimental
linguistics
- very good German and English skills (some courses will be taught in
German)
- strong organizational skills as well as an independent and
structured working style
The following knowledge and skills would be a plus:
- experience in statistical consulting or support of empirical
projects
- experience in teaching statistics and methods (e.g., in the form of
workshops)
- experience with or interest in interdisciplinary research on visual
and multimodal communication
