Linguistics and Multilingual Studies within the School of Humanities
at NTU Singapore offers a vibrant and interdisciplinary environment
for the study of language in its structural, social, cognitive, and
technological dimensions. We are internationally recognized for our
research on multilingualism, language diversity, and the interface
between linguistics and digital technology. Our focus is on
multilingualism in an Asian/Southeast Asian context, with our research
organized around four interconnected pillars:
1. Multilingualism in a Natural Laboratory – Exploring language
contact, code-switching, language maintenance, and the dynamics of
linguistic diversity in one of the world’s most naturally multilingual
societies.
2. Linguistic Description and Typology in Southeast Asia and Beyond –
Documenting, analyzing, and revitalizing the region’s rich linguistic
heritage and contributing to global typological theory.
3. Language, Technology, and AI – Advancing interdisciplinary work at
the intersection of linguistics, natural language processing, and data
science, including research on large language models (LLMs)
4. Discourse, Interaction, and Meaning-Making – Investigating how
meaning is co-constructed across languages, cultures, and
communicative modalities through integrative, appliable approaches to
discourse and interaction.
The School of Humanities is part of NTU Singapore’s College of
Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (https://www.ntu.edu.sg/hass),
