You are warmly invited to submit an abstract for a symposium organized
by the BAAL Research Synthesis in Applied Linguistics Special Interest
Group.
Date: 4th December 2025 (Thu)
Time: 9.30 am - 5 pm UK time
Platform: MS Teams
Keynote speaker: Prof James Thomas, UCL
Tentative title: How to select and evaluate AI tools for evidence
syntheses?
The symposium will begin with an opening keynote (1 hour), followed by
(parallel) paper presentation sessions throughout the day. Each paper
presentation will be 30 minutes (20 minutes presentation + 10 minutes
Q&A). Paper presentations should focus on reflections, discussions, or
evaluations of integration of artificial intelligence into the process
of conducting a research synthesis e.g., screening. The symposium will
conclude with a panel discussion.
Panel members: Dr Zoe Handley (York), Dr Tim Hampson (UCL), Dr Sha Liu
(British Council), Prof Sin-Wang Chong (St Andrews)
The working definition of AI for this symposium is as follows:
… a set of advanced technologies that enable machines to do highly
complex tasks effectively
– which would require intelligence if a person were to perform them
(Harwich and Laycock, 2018, p. 11)
Examples of AI-powered tools that can be used to conduct research
syntheses include Elicit, Rayyan, EPPI-Reviewer, and many more.
Presentations can also include reflections and
conceptual/theoretical/philosophical discussions on the ethical and
methodological implications for using AI in research syntheses.
