Description:

The Department of Linguistics and Translation (LT) at City University
of Hong Kong (CityU) is currently recruiting creative and motivated
postgraduate students interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in
language research at CityU.
At CityU, we view language as a dynamic and multifaceted system deeply
connected to cognition, culture, and society. Our research-driven
approach positions us as a global leader in modern linguistic studies
and fosters an innovative and interdisciplinary environment where
cutting-edge scholarship meets real-world impact. Our international
faculty, who come from all over the world and hold PhDs from more than
16 different institutions, are experts in a wide range of subfields,
including formal, functional, experimental, computational,
psycholinguistic, and applied approaches.
Our department thrives on four key pillars: collaboration, breadth,
application, and innovation. We strive to bridge disciplinary
boundaries, embrace theoretical diversity, make real-world impact, and
advance the future of language research. Whether applying experimental
or computational methods, working with large-scale corpora, or
tackling challenges in translation and cross-cultural communication,
students develop essential skills to navigate today's complex
linguistic environments and to make a meaningful impact in their
professional careers.
Admitted students are funded throughout the 3-4 years of their PhD via
one of the following mechanisms:
- regular CityU studentship (consisting of a monthly stipend and
research/conference support)
- Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS, a Hong Kong-wide funding
scheme)
- other CityU-internal awards (e.g., Presidential PhD Scholarship)
