Subject: Call for Abstracts: Approaching Politics in the Language Classroom- Pedagogical Strategies and Practices

This edited volume examines the intersections of language, culture,
and politics in language pedagogy. It asks how educators and
researchers conceptualize, navigate, and enact the political
dimensions of language teaching and learning, as well as engage in
education about political history and systems in the language
classroom. We invite contributions that critically explore how
political awareness, ideology, and engagement shape classroom
practice, curricular design, materials, assessment, and learner
experience across diverse contexts. We welcome theoretical and
empirical studies as well as practitioner reflections that foreground
pedagogical innovation and critique. In keeping with our project’s
framing, we are especially interested in work that engages learners in
critical discussions of political history and systems, ideology, and
power as integral dimensions of intercultural development.
Possible areas of exploration include, but are not limited to:
- Language, culture, and power: Intersections in educational settings;
analyses of political ideologies in language learning; bilingualism,
gender-inclusive language, and identity development.
- Curricula, materials, and institutions: Ideological and
institutional dimensions of curriculum and assessment; critical
textbook analysis; language education policy and governance.
- Pedagogy and classroom practice: Strategies for engaging political
ideas and processes; political education in the language classroom;
project-based or site-specific learning that connects classrooms with
broader sociopolitical contexts, political history, and political
systems; practitioner reflections on opportunities, challenges, and
outcomes.
- Global and comparative perspectives: Case studies from diverse
cultural and linguistic settings, including study abroad programs and
international collaborations, as well as comparative work that
examines how political issues and pedagogical practices intersect
across different educational or cultural contexts.
