About the Workshop:
Universal paradigmatic gaps are gaps in linguistic paradigms that
appear across languages and across users of a given language. Up to
now, only very few gaps of this kind have been discussed in the
literature. The one gap that has received substantial discussion
concerns the universal absence of a lexicalized negated form for the
quantifiers all, every or always: There appears to be no language in
the world that exhibits a single word (or lexical item) that means
‘not all’, ‘not every’ or ‘not always’.
This workshop aims to bring together researchers conducting
state-of-the-art work on the different topics explored within UNPAG.
That includes negation, quantification, polarity sensitivity and
modality, among others. We will consider questions such as: How does
polarity sensitivity manifest in modal expressions? Which combinations
of force and flavor are attested among modals? Are there
polarity-sensitive items that are not indefinites? Why do paradigmatic
gaps emerge in the first place? These issues will be discussed from
computational, experimental, theoretical, diachronic and typological
perspectives.
Contributed Presentations:
We invite submissions for 30 minute talks (20 minutes + 10 minutes for
discussion), and posters. We welcome abstracts on any of the topics
related to UNPAG’s goals, including works that do not deal with
paradigmatic gaps per se but are still relevant to the project.
Submission Guidelines:
 - The language of the abstracts and presentations should be English;
 - Abstracts must be submitted in PDF format and must be anonymous;
 - Abstracts are limited to a maximum of 2 pages in A4 format, with an
optional third page for references and figures;
 - Abstracts should use a 12pt font and 2.5cm margins on all four
sides.
 - People can submit up to two abstracts but not with the same set of
authors
Important Dates:
 - Submission deadline: November 20, 2025
 - Notification of acceptance: January 10, 2026
 - Workshop: March 10–12, 2026
