Workshop on Mixed Projections and Associated Constructions
Short Title: MixPAC
Theme: Mixed extended projections (constructions involving deverbal
nouns, deverbal adjectives or deverbal adverbs)

Date: 26-Jun-2026 - 26-Jun-2026
Location: Budapest, Hungary
Meeting URL:

Linguistic Field(s): Morphology; Syntax

Submission Deadline: 15-Dec-2025

The ELTE Research Centre for Linguistics is pleased to announce the
Workshop on Mixed Projections and Associated Constructions (MixPAC),
to be held in Budapest, Hungary, on 26 June 2026. The workshop seeks
to foster fruitful dialogue between researchers through syntactic
analyses of construction types involving mixed extended projections
(in particular, constructions involving deverbal nouns, deverbal
adjectives or deverbal adverbs), from a wide range of language
families and analytical perspectives. The workshop will be juxtaposed
to the Syntax of the Uralic Languages 6 conference (SOUL6, 24-25 June
2026, with a separate call for papers, focused more narrowly on the
Uralic family, see
https://nytud.hu/esemeny/syntax-of-uralic-languages-6-soul6). MixPAC
is connected to the research project "The ins and outs of mixed
extended projections", funded by the Hungarian National Research,
Development and Innovation Fund under grant NKFIH FK 145985.
Call for Papers:
We invite contributions that address issues in the syntax of mixed
extended projections and related constructions, in a generative or
typological framework. Abstracts on any topic related to this theme
are welcome, but we particularly encourage submissions dealing with:
- Constructions with mixed verbal and nominal properties (gerunds,
nominalizations, deverbal nominals)
- The reliability of the diagnostics used to test for nominal status
(e.g., external argument encoded as a possessor or possessive
agreement on the non-finite verb)
- The syntactic means of nominalization: via a nominal functional head
(e.g., n°) or a lexical (covert/overt) noun
- Mixed adjectival phrases (e.g., deverbal adjectives)
- The syntactic status of participles
- Constructions which traditionally have not been analyzed in terms of
mixed projections, but which may receive a more explanatory analysis
in those terms
- Constructions which traditionally have been analyzed in terms of
mixed projections, but for which an analysis not utilizing mixed
projections may be more explanatory
- New empirical data or novel analyses concerning mixed extended
projections in (members of) the Uralic, Turkic or Mayan language
families, which are a special focus of the research project The ins
and outs of mixed extended projections (but contributions on other
language families are also welcome)
Invited Speaker:
Eszter Ótott-Kovács (University of Toronto)
Important Dates:
Abstract submission deadline: 15 December 2025
Notification of acceptance: mid-February 2026
Workshop date: 26 June 2026
Abstract Submission:
Abstracts should be anonymous. They should not exceed two pages
(including examples, figures, and references), using 1in/2.5cm margins
and Times New Roman 12 pt font. Over the three days of MixPAC and
SOUL6, one person may be involved in at most two presentations.
Abstracts should be submitted to soul6 at nytud.hu as PDF files. In the
body of your email, please indicate the following:
- the submission is intended for the MixPAC workshop;
- the name(s) of the author(s);
- the title of the paper;
- the affiliation(s) of the author(s);
- the email address(es) of the author(s);
- whether you need a formal invitation (e.g., for a visa)
