Description:
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the Ohio State University
invites applications for admissions to their Ph.D. program in Hispanic
Linguistics (https://go.osu.edu/hl_phd) for fall 2026. OSU's rich
academic environment offers a unique opportunity for students to
receive comprehensive preparation as Hispanic Linguistics scholars and
professionals from our internationally-recognized professors Anna
Babel, Rebeka Campos-Astorkiza, John Grinstead, Javier Jasso, Holly
Nibert and Scott Schwenter. Departmental areas of expertise include
phonetics and phonology (Campos-Astorkiza and Nibert),
psycholinguistics and language development (Grinstead and Jasso),
sociolinguistics including linguistic anthropology (Babel and
Schwenter), pragmatics (Schwenter), syntax and semantics (Stigliano)
and second language acquisition (Campos-Astorkiza, Nibert and
Grinstead). Our faculty have many overlapping areas of research and we
encourage you to refer to individual faculty web pages
(https://go.osu.edu/hl_faculty) for further details on their research
and links to their papers. In addition, we have a dynamic group of
current graduate students that pursue a great variety of research
interests within Hispanic Linguistics. You can learn about the
graduate experience in our department in this video.
In addition to our Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics, students in our
program can also obtain a Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in
Second Language Studies (https://cllc.osu.edu/graduate/sls) or
Language Sciences (https://u.osu.edu/thebln) that enriches students’
training and encourages collaborations with linguists across OSU. Our
faculty and graduate students collaborate with the departments of
Linguistics, Psychology, Speech & Hearing Sciences, and Teaching and
Learning, as well as the Center for Cognitive Sciences, the Center for
Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and the Center for Latin American
Studies. Please reach out to our faculty members to learn more about
the cutting-edge research and training opportunities that are offered
in our program.
Our graduate students are fully funded for the five years of the
degree and receive support in the form of University Fellowships or
Graduate Teaching Associateships. Upon acceptance into the program,
students are informed of their funding package. In addition, graduate
students in the program have access to a wide number of opportunities
to fund their research, including participation in conferences (more
at https://sppo.osu.edu/graduate/funding).
More details about how to apply can be found at
https://sppo.osu.edu/graduate-admissions. Applications are due
December 11, 2025 for full consideration.
The department is holding a Virtual Open House on November 10 at 1
p.m. (EST). Register in advance for this meeting:
