The Austronesian Formal Linguistics Association (AFLA) promotes the
study of Austronesian languages from a formal perspective. Since 1994,
AFLA has served internationally as the most prominent and influential
venue for presentation and discussion of recent research on
Austronesian languages. Research disseminated at AFLA spans all
subfields of linguistics (syntax, semantics, phonology, morphology,
sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, historical
linguistics, etc). AFLA has a history of bringing together leading
scholars, native speaker linguists, and junior scholars in the formal
study of Austronesian languages.
In addition to the main conference, AFLA 33 will feature a special
session on te reo Māori. While the main sessions focus on formal
linguistic analyses, this session welcomes research on all aspects of
te reo Māori — including documentation, revitalisation,
sociolinguistic perspectives, and applied work. Its aim is to provide
an international platform for scholars and communities dedicated to
the study, revitalisation, and maintenance of the Māori language.
Invited Speakers:
Dr. Rowena Garcia, Leibniz-Centre General Linguistics (ZAS)
Dr. Jens Hopperdietzel, University of Cologne
Dr. Saurov Syed, Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland
Dr. Winifred Bauer, Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of
Wellington
