Title: What (if anything) happens to grammatical gender in L1
attrition?
Professor Monika S. Schmid (University of York)
Abstract:
Grammatical gender in bilingual development is of particular interest,
as it is encoded as part of the lemmatic information in the mental
lexicon (and is therefore item-based), but also triggers concord
across the items in the phrase or sentence (rule-based). This talk
will focus on the representation, processing and use of gender
information in an L1 that falls into disuse and exists in competition
with another language. I will give an overview of existing work on L1
attrition of grammatical gender, and then present new findings from
experiments on gender priming and responses to gender violations (EEG
and self-paced reading) in various languages.
Bio:
Monika S. Schmid is Head of Department of Language and Linguistic
Science at the University of York, UK. Her 2000 PhD (University of
Düsseldorf) focused on first language attrition among German-Jewish
Holocaust survivors. She has held positions at VU University Amsterdam
(Netherlands), the University of Groningen (Netherlands) and the
University of Essex (UK). She is a Fellow of the British Academy, the
Academy of Social Sciences, and the Academia Europaea. She has
published two monographs, several collected volumes and special
issues, including the Oxford Handbook of Language Attrition (2019),
alongside over 50 research articles. She has received funding from a
range of sources, including the German Research Council (DFG), the
Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO) and the UK Economics and
Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC) for her work.

Titel: Beth (os o gwbl) sy'n digwydd i rywedd gramadegol mewn
athreuliad iaith gyntaf?
Profesor Monika S. Schmid (Prifysgol De York)
Crynodeb:
Mae rhywedd gramadegol mewn datblygiad dwyieithog o ddiddordeb
arbennig, gan ei fod wedi'i amgodio fel rhan o'r wybodaeth lematig yn
yr eirfa feddyliol (ac felly'n seiliedig ar eitemau), ond mae hefyd yn
sbarduno cytundeb ar draws yr eitemau yn yr ymadrodd neu'r frawddeg
(yn seiliedig ar reolau). Bydd y sgwrs hon yn canolbwyntio ar
gynrychiolaeth, prosesu a defnyddio gwybodaeth am rywedd mewn iaith
gyntaf sy'n mynd yn anweithredol ac sy’n bodoli mewn cystadleuaeth ag
iaith arall. Byddaf yn rhoi trosolwg o'r gwaith presennol ar
athreuliad iaith gyntaf o rywedd gramadegol, ac yna'n cyflwyno
canfyddiadau newydd o arbrofion ar baratoi rhywedd ac ymatebion i
dorri rheolau rhywedd (EEG a darllen ar eich cyflymder eich hun) mewn
amrywiol ieithoedd.
Bio
Monika S. Schmid yw Pennaeth yr Adran Iaith a Gwyddor Ieithyddol ym

Holocost Almaenig-Iddewig. Bu'n gweithio cyn hynny ym Mhrifysgol VU
Amsterdam (Yr Iseldiroedd), Prifysgol Groningen (Yr Iseldiroedd) a
Phrifysgol Essex (DU). Mae hi'n Gymrawd yr Academi Brydeinig,
Academi'r Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol, a'r Academia Europaea. Mae hi wedi
cyhoeddi dau fonograff, nifer o gyfrolau casgledig a rhifynnau
