IcoLL2026 is the joint conference of the 4th Iconicity Seminar
(IcoSem) and the 15th International Symposium on Iconicity in Language
and Literature (ILL). For the first time, the two international
conferences on iconicity will take place together on 21-23 February
2026 hosted by the Nagoya University Graduate School of Humanities.
The deadline has been extended till 15 September 2025.

Presentation:
French phonology is currently undergoing a major renewal, combining
theoretical and empirical advances from contemporary approaches with
renewed perspectives in diachronic phonology. This session aims to
explore these recent developments by highlighting the specific
contributions of theoretical, historical, and experimental approaches
to French phonology, studied both independently and in synergy with
related disciplines. Work on Medieval French, the evolution from Latin
to Old French, as well as in-depth studies of grapheme?phonology
interactions in a diachronic perspective, are particularly encouraged.
The diachronic phonology of French has recently benefited from
innovative theoretical and methodological frameworks, particularly
stratal and cyclic approaches, which adopt representational and
computational perspectives on phonological change. These models enable
a thorough re-analysis of complex evolutionary phenomena such as vowel
nasalisation, prosodic reorganisations (stress, rhythmic structure),
and segmental dynamics in their interaction with morphological and
syntactic structure.
The session also integrates research on dialectal and regional
variation in diachrony, especially studies on medieval scriptae, whose
analysis sheds light on the complexity and diversity of French
phonological trajectories. Contributions grounded in the most recent
theoretical frameworks of contemporary phonology are also welcome,
including constraint-based phonology (Optimality Theory), Government
Phonology, and Dependency or Element Phonology, based on clearly
defined phonological primitives (elements, primitive features). These
approaches, grounded in precise formalisation of phonological
representations and their interaction with experimental phonetics,
provide robust tools for analysing current phonological phenomena of
French and their interfaces with morphology, syntax, and other levels
of language, thereby enriching theoretical and empirical understanding
of linguistic change.
Phonetics and phonology are jointly central to this session, in a
perspective articulating experimental, theoretical, and diachronic
dimensions. Phonetics is approached through its articulatory,
acoustic, and perceptual dimensions; phonology through the diversity
of its synchronic and diachronic analytical frameworks. Contributions
exploring phonetic variation in French?whether regional, stylistic,
sociophonetic, clinical, or related to acquisition?are especially
welcome. The contribution of experimental phonetics to fine-grained
modelling of phonological units, prosodic dynamics, and coarticulatory
processes is a key axis for dialogue between phoneticians and
phonologists.

El pensamiento filos?fico est? presente, impl?cita o expl?citamente,
en la construcci?n, el desarrollo y la argumentaci?n de las ciencias
humanas y sociales. No son pocos los trabajos sobre filosof?a en la
tradici?n del estudio de las lenguas: la ling??stica, como ciencia,
participa del criterio ontol?gico y epistemol?gico en la mayor parte
de los conceptos con los que opera; dentro de esta necesidad, son
urgentes trabajos que estudien los fen?menos ling??sticos desde esta
mirada.
Las coordinadoras de este monogr?fico, Laura Mateos Candelario (UAM) y
Elena Monge Hermida (UCM/UISMP) deseamos organizar una segunda edici?n
de la sesi?n tem?tica celebrada en el a?o 2023 en el congreso anual de
esta sociedad. Esperamos encontrarnos con autores interesados en estas
cuestiones, reflexionar sobre nuevos y antiguos asuntos relacionados
con el dominio de la filosof?a de la ling??stica y ofrecer un espacio
para la reflexi?n metate?rica que pudieran aprovechar investigadores
en todas las subdisciplinas ling??sticas y otras orientaciones
especializadas.
Conocemos, m?s all? de las referencias sobre las que reposa nuestra
propuesta, obras contempor?neas que comparten nuestra preocupaci?n
sobre la relevancia de la teor?a filos?fica en el estudio ling??stico;
una ciencia para la que se espera una praxis ?ptima habr? de tener,
necesariamente, una base filos?fica rigurosa, consciente y de calidad.
Por tanto, esta sesi?n se propone como continuaci?n para los trabajos
ling??sticos de las ?ltimas d?cadas que han puesto de manifiesto la
necesidad de estudiar determinados problemas desde una perspectiva
ontol?gica y epistemol?gica expl?cita, pr?ctica que tiene como fin
perseguir dos metas principales:
- Entender que la ling??stica necesita de una relaci?n comparativa con
los m?todos de trabajo de otras ciencias y
- Reivindicar la incorporaci?n interna de la cr?tica epistemol?gica en
la construcci?n de las hip?tesis, el uso de las metodolog?as y el
tratamiento de los datos emp?ricos en nuestras disciplinas.
Algunos de los problemas que se encuentran en los trabajos
ling??sticos debidos a un criterio filos?fico insuficiente, de los que
ya partimos en la primera edici?n de este monogr?fico y que los
autores pueden utilizar para sus investigaciones, son la marcaci?n
ate?rica, la pseudounificaci?n de fen?menos, la reconstrucci?n de
procesos, la causalidad nula o la no incorporaci?n de perspectivas
externas en estudios que consideran variables de tipo
extraling??stico, entre otros.
Tambi?n creemos necesario cuestionar ciertas tendencias actuales en la
investigaci?n ling??stica y abordar determinadas preguntas en t?rminos
filos?ficos. A?adimos algunas de las que consideramos pertinentes:
- ?En qu? condiciones es l?cito el uso de herramientas metodol?gicas
como la introspecci?n, el corpus o la encuesta, entre otras?,
- ?Por qu? la precisi?n estad?stica es m?s importante en unos estudios
que en otros?,
- ?Por qu? hay problemas ling??sticos que siempre y solamente se
abordan desde ciertas perspectivas?,
- ?Por qu? nos interesa (o por qu? no) que la ling??stica sea una
ciencia natural o social?,
- ?Cu?les son realmente los l?mites entre las disciplinas
ling??sticas?,
- ?Cu?les son los principios filos?ficos impl?citos sobre los que se
sostiene una macroteor?a (por ejemplo, la Gram?tica Generativa en sus
manifestaciones actuales)? o
- ?Cu?l es el papel de la norma y cu?l el de la descripci?n en la
actividad ling??stica humana?
Por su parte, es bienvenido para la sesi?n el estudio de la
interacci?n de la ling??stica con otras ciencias, tanto desde el punto
de vista te?rico como pr?ctico, con el fin de tratar de responder a
inc?gnitas como las siguientes:
- ?Qu? aplicaciones ?tiles tiene cada visi?n?,
- ?Qu? implicaciones filos?ficas conlleva concebir la lengua desde una
perspectiva concreta? o
- ?C?mo influye la concepci?n de la ling??stica como similar a unas
ciencias o a otras en los fen?menos ling??sticos que se consideran
relevantes para la investigaci?n contempor?nea?
De esta forma, ser?n bienvenidas propuestas encuadradas dentro de las
siguientes l?neas, siempre que su orientaci?n y sus objetivos
principales sean de ?ndole filos?fica:
- Aspectos epistemol?gicos sobre la sem?ntica y la semi?tica de las
lenguas.
- La filosof?a del lenguaje y sus relaciones con la ling??stica.
- Lenguas naturales y lenguas no naturales.
- Ideolog?a, sesgos y actitudes en los trabajos ling??sticos.
- Universalidad, tipolog?a y variaci?n ling??stica.
- La ling??stica como ciencia natural o como ciencia social.
- Trabajos comparativos entre las perspectivas te?ricas predominantes
en los ?ltimos a?os.
- La epistemolog?a de los l?mites entre las disciplinas ling??sticas.
- La introspecci?n, la intuici?n, la observaci?n, la deducci?n, la
inducci?n, la gramaticalidad y la aceptabilidad en la ling??stica
te?rica y aplicada.
- Notas sobre la metodolog?a de los trabajos ling??sticos: el uso de
corpus, las pr?cticas estad?sticas y la validez de las variables y los
informantes.

Subject: Panel at LAGB Linguistics Association of Northern Ireland and Great Britain: "Rhythms of Expression: Intersections of Music and Language across Genres"


This panel comprises a collection of 6 contributions and 2 general
discussions. Our?talks?focus on the specific relationship between
music and language.?The first?3 papers report new findings in
textsetting. These talks collectively argue that musical settings
actively shape and expose hidden linguistic structures. The analysis
of right-headed constituents in Italian pop songs (Talk 1) challenges
the traditional trochaic model by showing how iambic patterns emerge
under musical prominence. Similarly, the study of sixteenth-century
madrigals (Talk 2) demonstrates how the demands of tautosyllabic
vowels constrain musical choices. Finally, the analysis of headless
triplets in music (Talk 3) shows how catalexis (Jakobs, 1994) aligns
with and confirms the presence of ternary feet. A round table will
follow inviting contributions on textsetting issues.
The second part of this panel turns to pitch and tonal organisation.
The tonal analysis of Zulu (Talk 4) reveals that pitch transitions in
speech domains often follow harmonic intervals familiar in music, an
observation that destabilises claims about the lack of systematic
pitch in language. Talk 5?examines how formal operations from language
games can model pitch-based transformations in jazz and post-tonal
music, suggesting a common structural vocabulary. Finally, Talk 6
offers a developmental perspective of music acquisition and language
processing, showing how early perceptual sensitivity to pitch and
musical intervals evolves through critical periods, and how exposure
to musical culture influences the ability to process and categorise
pitch-based patterns. A round table will follow inviting contributions
on music/language general issues.

The Linguistics Department at the University of Florida is excited to
announce that the Call for Abstracts for the Florida Linguistics
Yearly Meeting (FLYM) 2025 is now open.
FLYM 2025 will take place on Friday October 10th and Saturday October
11th. This year's theme is Language in Context: Theory and Community.
We welcome submissions in sociolinguistics, theoretical, and
computational linguistics, and, in the spirit of the theme, we
particularly welcome submissions focused on the intersection of
sociolinguistics and theoretical linguistics. Sessions will include
talks (10-15 minutes with 5-10 minutes of Q&A) and posters. We are
also excited to announce our keynote speaker will be Dr. Jessica
Kantarovich from The Ohio State University.
Abstract submission has been extended until September 10th with
notification of acceptance in mid-September.
