Description:

The Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics at
Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for our Applied
Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition Ph.D. program.
The goal of the Ph.D. program is to create independent and insightful
researchers capable of using analytical and empirical methods to
understand the acquisition, use, and maintenance of additional
languages. Our unique program provides students with a theoretical
grounding in applied linguistics, coupled with broad training in
qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Through close
1-on-1 mentoring, students gain a strong interdisciplinary
understanding of the field, along with the knowledge and skills needed
to conduct high-quality empirical investigations. Recent graduates
have gone on to careers in academia, industry, military, and
non-profit.
Faculty:
Khaled Al Masaeed (Pragmatics, Language in culture & society)
Uju Anya (Identity & investment, Critical discourse studies)
Katharine Burns (Bilingualism & heritage speakers, Language policy)
Sébastien Dubreil (Linguistic landscapes, Game-based learning)
Sanghee Kang (Writing & composition, Task-based instruction)
Adam van Compernolle (Sociolinguistics, Concept-based instruction &
dynamic assessment)
Seth Wiener (Psycholinguistics, Speech perception & production)
Students accepted to the program receive a four year funding package
including a full tuition waiver, a competitive bi-monthly stipend, and
summer support. Funded students receive a first-year teaching release.
Students serve as instructors and/or teaching assistants for the
remaining three years.
We will be hosting a virtual information session about our program on
October 7, 2024 at 8pm EST. For more information about the program,
