Linguistic Field(s): Semantics

Submission Deadline: 30-Nov-2025

The University of British Columbia is pleased to host a joint
conference bringing together SULA (Semantics of Under-represented
Languages in the Americas) and TripleA (Semantics of Languages of
Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania) on May 12 -15, 2026. This will be
the first time that these conferences will be combined into one joint
event. The conference also marks the 25th Anniversary of SULA, which
took place for the first time in 2001.
The goal of the conference is to bring together researchers working on
languages or dialects which are under-represented in the literature on
formal semantics. We especially encourage abstract submissions from
those whose work involves primary fieldwork or experimentation and/or
by native speaker linguists. We strongly encourage the participation
of graduate students.
There will be a Speaker Panel on Indigenous perspectives on
linguistics research and language revitalization.
Invited Speakers:
Ana Laura Arrieta Zamudio (University of British Columbia)
Heather Burge (University of Alaska Southeast)
Reginald Duah (University of Ghana; to be confirmed)
Herman Fillmore (Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California)
Terrance Gatchalian (University of Toronto)
Zahra Mirrazi (University of Göttingen)
Roberta Pires de Oliveira (Federal University of Santa Catarina)
Justin Royer (Université de Montréal)
Eve Suharwardy (University of Manchester; to be confirmed)
Call for Papers:
We invite submissions for 30 minute talks (20 minutes + 10 minutes for
discussion), and posters. Ideal submissions should be:
*original formal work on the semantics of underrepresented language(s)
of the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia or Oceania;
*based on fieldwork or experimentation and/or by native speaker
linguists.
Abstracts must be anonymous and in PDF format. Abstracts should
include up to two pages of exposition including supporting examples. A
third page may be used for references. Text should be in 12pt Times
New Roman or similar, on US letter page size with 2.5cm (or 1″)
margins.
Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract
submission, or two joint submissions.
Abstracts deadline: November 30, 2025, 23.59 anywhere in the world
