Call for Papers:
The tenth biennial conference on Current Approaches to Spanish and
Portuguese Second Language Phonology (CASPSLaP) will be held at
Brigham Young University on February 27–28, 2026. CASPSLaP brings
together leading experts in the field of second language acquisition
(SLA) of Spanish and Portuguese pronunciation. The conference will
highlight the themes of acquisition of dialectal variation and
fine-grained phonetic traits, heritage language phonology, and social
variation in second language phonological acquisition; however,
abstracts are invited for presentations and posters on any topic
related to the second language acquisition of the Spanish and
Portuguese sound systems. Submissions are also invited for Ignite, a
special session focused on pedagogy in second language pronunciation
learning (see below).
20-Minute Presentation:
Anonymous one-page abstracts, with a second page allowed for
references and/or examples, should be submitted by October 31, 2025.
Individual papers will be 20-minute presentations followed by 10
minutes for questions.
Poster Presentation:
Anonymous one-page abstracts, with a second page allowed for
references and/or examples, should be submitted by October 31, 2025.
Posters will be displayed for a 2-hour block of time.
Ignite Presentation:
We also solicit submissions for an interactive pedagogy-focused
session in which participants will present brief (10 minute)
micro-teaching lessons in a rotating “speed-dating” format. These
lessons should showcase a specific pedagogical technique or activity
to teach a particular sound, feature, or process, or to help learners
overcome a particular problem. Such lessons may be aimed at students
enrolled in courses specifically treating pronunciation/phonetics or
for learners in general language courses. Submissions should include a
detailed lesson plan including: title of lesson, statement of
objectives, summary of task(s), description of materials, the activity
itself, and later follow up (such as other activities, homework and/or
assessments), and any references. The Ignite session will be organized
by Dr. Lauren Truman (Brigham Young University). Please submit lesson
plans by October 31, 2025.
