54th Poznań Linguistic Meeting Thematic Session: Managing linguistic
diversity. Social factors and constraints in the transmission of
multilingualism organized by Justyna Olko and Elwira Dexter-Sobkowiak
(University of Warsaw)

Submission Deadline: 15-Apr-2026
The session aims to explore some of the urgent questions related to
the conceptualization, study, and management of linguistic diversity
in a broad cross-cultural perspective. We are particularly interested
in identifying key factors and challenges in the continuity,
evolution, and reproduction of diversity, with a special focus on the
transmission of social and individual multilingualism in diverse
language ecologies. By engaging with different methodologies and
research paradigms, we seek to examine the long-term legacies of
colonialism and the nation-state in the erosion of linguistic
diversity, as well as sustainable strategies for its protection and
promotion.
The session aims to bring together scholars working on linguistic
diversity in both European and non-European contexts, ensuring fair
representation of Indigenous and minoritized settings from the Global
South. Topics addressed in the session will include:
 - evolutionary and mixed-method approaches to linguistic diversity
and multilingualism
 - factors contributing to the emergence, maintenance, reduction, and
loss of linguistic diversity
 - decolonial and deglobalizing paradigms, as well as Southern
epistemologies, in approaches to linguistic diversity
 - implications of language ideologies and attitudes for language
maintenance
 - language policies and educational strategies oriented toward the
preservation of linguistic diversity and sustainable multilingualism
 - practical strategies and paradigms aimed at preventing further loss
of linguistic diversity
