Description:
The Department of English at the American University of Sharjah
invites applications for a full-time Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)
position associated with a Faculty Research Grant (FRG26-S43) project
titled: The Role of HVPT and GenAI in Technology-Supported L2
Pronunciation Development. Adopting a mixed-methods experimental
design, the project investigates how High Variability Phonetic
Training (HVPT) and Generative AI-mediated interaction support the
perceptual and productive development of L2 Turkish segmental features
by L1 Arabic speakers. The project will run for two years and the
successful applicant will work closely with Dr. Özgür Parlak on data
collection, acoustic analysis, survey administration, and preparation
of research outputs for conferences and journal publication. During
this period, the successful applicant will be fully supported to
complete their Master’s in TESOL (30 credits) at the American
University of Sharjah. The assistantship includes:
- Full tuition coverage for the MA TESOL program
- A competitive monthly stipend
- Extensive hands-on research training in phonetic analysis,
experimental design, and quantitative/qualitative data analysis
The successful candidate must apply to and be accepted into the MA
TESOL program at the American University of Sharjah in order to take
up the research assistantship. The American University of Sharjah is
accredited in the United States of America by the Middle States
Commission on Higher Education, and it ranked #272 globally in the
2026 QS World University Rankings. Further information about the MA

Selection Criteria
Required:
- BA in Linguistics, ELT, or a closely related field with a minimum
cumulative GPA of 3.0 at graduation
- Strong interest in L2 phonology and pronunciation research
- English Proficiency: minimum overall IELTS score of 7 or TOEFL iBT
score of 5
Preferred:
- Background in second language acquisition and/or L2 phonetics and
phonology research
- Prior experience using Praat
- Prior experience using AI tools for research
- Interest in technology-mediated or AI-supported language learning
