Subject: CommuniKite Open-Access Platform

KITE is a multilingual virtual platform designed as a linguistic and
cultural first-aid kit for people in humanitarian emergencies. It
therefore serves as an initial language immersion experience for
migrants and refugees with no prior knowledge of the host country’s
language, facilitating their first interactions within the community
and promoting their linguistic adaptation and genuine integration.
This platform contains six basic tools:
- KITE 1. Arriving in a host country: essential information on
administrative processes and useful resources for everyday needs.
- KITE 2. Picture dictionary: pictographic glossary of practical words
for everyday communication.
- KITE 3. Sounds of the language: you can learn the way letters are
pronounced, how to spell sounds, how to combine sounds, how syllables
are built, and how to use word stress and intonation in sentences.
- KITE 4. Communicative interaction: how to express yourself politely
and interact appropriately to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts in
communication, using linguistic examples from everyday communication.
- KITE 5. Non-verbal communication: overview of non-verbal
communication, which includes everything we express in interactions
with others not through words, but through body language and behavior.
- KITE 6. Intercultural experiences: real stories shared by migrants,
recounting their experiences both in their host country and in the
places they come from.
All these materials are available in German, French, Italian, Polish,
Portuguese and Spanish, with translations into three additional
languages: English, Ukrainian and, coming soon, Arabic.
The open-access platform (https://kite.usal.es) is one of the outcomes
of the Erasmus+ CommuniKite project, led by the University of
Salamanca, in which the University of Coimbra, the University of
Bologna, the University of Heidelberg, the University of Kyiv, the
University of Poitiers and the University of Warsaw are also
participating.
This resource may also be useful for NGOs and other language and
cultural facilitators, as it contains materials that are
contextualised and specifically designed for teaching and
self-learning the language of the host country. We also hope it will
be of interest to the research community in fields such as applied
linguistics, language teaching in general, and the linguistic and
cultural integration of groups such as migrants and refugees.
